Fire crews snuff East Bremerton brush fire

BREMERTON — A brush fire late Monday torched a hillside near the East Bremerton community gym, but Bremerton fire crews snuffed it before it could spread. 

Firefighters were called to the hillside at about 8 p.m., according to Bremerton Assistant Fire Chief John Payne. A fast-acting crew drove an engine to the nearby Boys & Girls Club complex, where a hydrant provided plenty of flow to extinguish the brief blaze. It was out within the hour. 

Payne said he don't know the exact cause of the fire but that extremely dry conditions were likely a factor in its spre. It is not being investigated as an arson.
